After CWC meet, Surjewala said that India needs a strong opposition and the party feels Rahul Gandhi is fit to lead the opposition front. However, Rahul’s decision is final on resignation.
New Delhi| Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s resignation is under consideration, party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala told the media today. He was addressing the media after a brief meeting of the Congress Working Committee- the highest decision making body of the party.
Surjewala said that India needs a strong opposition and the party feels Rahul Gandhi is fit to lead the opposition front. He also thanked Congress workers across the country for standing by the party. However, Surjewala said that Rahul’s decision is final on resignation. Rahul Gandhi, in the CWC, said that he will work with full force for his party.

Five groups for consultation:
To decide on the next congress chief, CWC has formed five groups representing different parts of the country. There are five groups representing- North, South, East, West and North East. These groups will hold talks with the regional leaders on the appointment of the next party president. Reportedly, Sonia Gandhi was asked to hold talks with leaders in the eastern region and Rahul Gandhi was asked to meet leaders from the western region.

Sonia, Rahul opt out of the consultation process:
Congress’ communication department head, Surjewala said that despite CWC asking the Gandhis to be a part of the process, they have refused to do so. Sonia and Rahul Gandhi walked out of the CWC meeting. Answering the questions on the same, Surjewala said, “Rahul and Sonia Gandhi felt a democratic process has to prevail and everyone’s views must be taken. That is why they recused themselves from the party.”
CWC to meet at 8 PM again:
After consulting the regional leaders, the groups will meet again at 8 PM in the evening. A report will be presented and then the decision will be taken accordingly.
