Delhi Riots: How International Media Covered The Violence In North East Delhi During Trump Visit

At least 20 people have been killed in the intense communal riots happening in northeastern Delhi and several have been injured, mostly with gunshot wounds.

New Delhi| First clashes occurred between a mob and anti-CAA protesters in Jaffarabad area of NE Delhi as the mob brought in truckloads of stones which were used to attack the peaceful protesters.

The attack happened mere hours after Kapil Mishra led a pro-CAA rally nearby, where he gave an ‘ultimatum’ to Delhi police.

On Monday and Tuesday, as the US President Trump and Indian PM Modi deepened the ties between India & US, the clashes took shape of a riot which spread to at least 10 districts of NE Delhi.

The International media highlighted the violence with respect to Trump’s visit as he was miles away from the part where communal riots are happening.

Bloomberg reported, “Violence erupted in New Delhi just hours before U.S. President Donald Trump was due to arrive in the Indian capital, as rival groups protested the country’s contentious religion-based citizenship law.”

“Police fired tear gas to disperse the protesters and imposed curfew-like restrictions in Delhi’s northeast, with demonstrators both for and against the law throwing stones and setting vehicles and shops on fire, television footages showed. A policeman was killed and another injured in the clashes, according to reports from the Press Trust of India,” it noted.

Washington Post’s piece read, “Rioters roamed the streets with iron rods and wooden sticks, demanding to know whether people were Hindus or Muslims. Mosques were damaged and shops were set ablaze, sending smoke billowing high into the air. People with gunshot wounds and blunt trauma from hurled stones rushed into a nearby hospital.”

“Two days of communal violence in the northeastern part of Delhi have left at least 17 people dead and 150 injured in the worst such clashes in India’s capital in decades.”

“The violence happened to unfold as President Trump made his first official visit to India and conducted meetings Tuesday in the tony central area of the city home to central government buildings and embassies.”

Meanwhile, LA Times highlighted how Trump avoided the CAA as they reported- “Wrapping up a two-day trip to India, President Trump declined Tuesday to condemn India’s controversial new citizenship law, which discriminates against Muslims, and downplayed the threat from the coronavirus, which now has spread to 34 countries, claiming it’s “very well under control in our country.”

“Saying he didn’t want to say anything to overshadow his “fantastic” trip to India, Trump declined to criticize Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new citizenship law, which excludes Muslims and has helped fuel a new wave of communal violence.”

“Ten people have been reported killed, and dozens injured, in Muslim-majority neighbourhoods north of the capital since Sunday. The clashes between protesters in favour of the law and those against it quickly took on religious overtones, with Hindu and Muslim mobs fighting each other,” they wrote.

The Guardian reported on the violence in the Indian national capital as, “Donald Trump’s visit to Delhi has been overshadowed by deadly protests that have continued to engulf India’s capital, as Muslim and Hindu groups clashed violently and the death toll rose to nine.”

Since Sunday eve, northeastern Delhi has been burning due to mob attacking people, houses, vehicles, policemen, shires and everyone and everything that they see.
