Delhi Riots: Shoot-At-Sight Order In Parts Of The City, DCP Claims Normalcy in North East Delhi

According to sources in Delhi Police’s NE district dept, shoot-at-sight order was declared in parts of NE Delhi, while four areas are also under curfew.

New Delhi| A ‘shoot-at-sight’ order has been issued in parts of northeast Delhi as violence continued in the capital city since Sunday night, police sources told IANS.

This was informed to the locals by a Delhi police personnel using a speaker system. The cop also appealed to the people to stay inside their homes and not to unnecessarily come out on the roads. As per the report, the cops were earlier firing tear gas shells in an attempt to bring the situation under control.

Shortly after the shoot-at-sight orders by the police in northeast Delhi, companies of Rapid Action Force and the Delhi police moved into the main area of Mustafabad. For several hours, firing could be heard amid slogans of ā€œJai Shri Ramā€.

In another major development IPS officer S N Shrivastava has been appointed as a special commissioner (Law and Order) in Delhi police by an immediate effect.

Delhi Commissioner of Police, Amulya Patnaik, on Wednesday claimed that normalcy has returned in North-East district to a large extent, senior officers are on rounds, extra forces have been given and a lot of confidence-building measures are being taken.

ā€œThe entire area is on edge. The arson has not stopped and people are now entering homes. Women and children are being attacked. The police are literally standing by and no one is coming to help us. We donā€™t know how we can stay here,ā€ said a local, The Indian Express reported.

Delhiā€™s Mustafabad area remained tense till late Tuesday night as clashes between the police and rioters continued. Locals alleged people living in Hindu localities had entered Muslim-dominated areas and attacked houses and people for several hours, even despite heavy police deployment.

The violence, which started on Sunday after anti-CAA protesters blocked a road outside Jaffrabad Metro station and BJP leader Kapil Mishra called a gathering in favour of CAA, intensified on Tuesday, despite shored up security in the city in view of US President Donald Trump’s visit.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday pulled up the Delhi Police saying there was lack of professionalism. The SC said had the police acted in accordance with the law, many problems wouldnā€™t have taken place.

These things would not have happened had police not allowed instigators to get away, the Supreme Court said. Justice Joseph gave an example of police in the US and UK and said that force has to act professionally as per the law if something goes wrong.
