Embarrassment For Congress Continues as 5 Gujarat MLAs Resign

After the 5 MLAs have resigned, Congress in Gujarat will face difficulties to gain 74 votes required to win 2 Rajya Sabha seats.

Ahmedbad| Five Congress Party MLAs from Gujarat have resigned ahead of the Rajya Sabha Polls, pushing the party in dark waters after the Madhya Pradesh episode.

After the 5 MLAs have resigned, Congress in Gujarat will face difficulties to gain 74 votes required to win 2 Rajya Sabha seats.

After 4 MLAs submitted their resignation to the Speaker of Gujarat assembly, another MLA resigned leading the count to 5. MLA Pravin Maroo later revealed that he had also resigned.

Congress had taken 14 MLAs to Jaipur on Saturday ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections. The 4 MLAs were missing. They have now resigned from their posts. Among the 4 MLAs who’ve resigned, MLA JV Kakdia and Somabhai Patel are the two.

Amid the chaos, Gujarat Congress MLA Virjibhai Thummar refused that MLAs have resigned saying, “Rumours are rife but the party hasn’t received any resignation. MLA Somabhai Patel was in touch with Congress till yesterday. I tried but couldn’t contact JV Kakadia and another legislator.”

Congress Party had started shifting its MLAs amid fear of horse-trading ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections. It is speculated that Congress will shift another batch of 20 MLAs to Rajasthan on Sunday.

Chief whip of Congress in Rajasthan Assembly Mahesh Joshi and deputy chief whip Mahendra Chaudhary received the MLAs at the Jaipur airport and escorted them to a resort located on Jaipur Delhi highway.

Joshi informed that more MLAs will be shifted to Rajasthan on Sunday.

BJP will need 111 votes to secure three seats in Rajya Sabha from Gujarat which will require cross-voting from Congress MLAs. Congress, however, will require 74 seats to secure 2 seats. Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani has confirmed that he’ll vote for the Congress party.
