“Ensure safe passage and emergency treatment for injured,” says Delhi HC to police

The Delhi High Court ordered Police to provide safe passage to all injured victims of the violence to government hospitals for treatment

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court in a midnight hearing directed Delhi Police to ensure safe passage and emergency treatment for those injured in the violence over the Citizenship Amendment Act. The court held an emergency hearing at the residence of Justice S Murlidhar.

Advocate Suroor Mander phoned the High Court judge to hear the writ plea on an emergency basis seeking safe passage for the injured to medical institutions with adequate facilities.

The Delhi High Court bench of Justices S Muralidhar and Anup J Bhambhani directed Delhi Police to deploy all resources to ensure this. A compliance report is also called by bench including information about the injured and the treatment offered to them.

The Delhi High Court ordered Police to provide safe passage to all injured victims of the violence to government hospitals for treatment. The petitioner informed the court how the hundreds who have been injured in violence in Delhi were being unable to move to a bigger hospital.

The Delhi High Court said the primary concern at this stage is the safety of the injured and immediate medical attention to ensure the safe passage of the injured at GTB Hospital, LNJP Hospital or Maulana Azad or any other government hospital.

On Wednesday the matter will be heard at 2.15 pm.

The high court bench said the order be communicated to the medical superintendents of the Guru Tegh Bahadur and Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan hospitals in Delhi.

The communal violence happened over the Citizenship Amendment Act in northeast Delhi had claimed around 20 lives till Tuesday as police struggled to check the rioters who ran on roads, burning and looting shops, pelting stones and thrashing people.
