Facebook removes 687 accounts linked with Congress ahead of Lok Sabha polls

New Delhi | Social Networking site Facebook in a major move ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha election remove 687 accounts and links associated with the Congress party in order to curb fake news.

In the first kind of move to tackle fake new, Facebook has taken such action against a political party. Facebook on Monday said that the social media site has removed the pages connected to the country’s main opposition party due to its ‘unprofessional behaviour’.

Facebook further added that the pages were removed due to their behaviour or non authentic information. The company in the meantime has also removed 103 accounts connected to the Pakistan Army staff. Facebook cybersecurity chief Nathaniel Ghliecher responding on the issue said “While the people behind this activity attempted to conceal their identities, our review found that it was connected to individuals associated with an INC (Indian National Congress) IT Cell,” He further clarified that Facebook was removing accounts based on their behaviour, not the content they posted.
