“Favour Friends”: Rahul Gandhi plants attack on PM Modi on biggest fighter jet deal

Rahul Gandhi, the national president for the Congress party, who has very often criticized the Rafale deal, planted even more attacks on Prime Minister Modi after the ruling government started off the request for the information process to purchase 100 more fighter jets. Rahul, in a tweet, alleged that the government had taken the thirty-six Rafale fighter jets at quite a higher price in order to roll out a new tender and “favour friends”.

He tweeted, “40,000 Cr. loss to exchequer was “Sayonara” (good bye) money to French, so PM could re-tender contract and favour friends”.

India seeks to purchase 100 fighter jets in a deal that will most likely cost around $15 billion and has sent in a “request for information” or RFI to the makers of the plane in a deal that will transform into largest order for fighter jets in the world.

The RFI consists of information as to how the IAF (Indian Air Force) plans to shortlist and finalise the fighter jets. The plane-makers that are expected to compete for the deal of India’s fighter jet are SAAB AB of Sweden, Lockheed Martin Corp. and Boeing Co. of the US, Dassault Aviation SA of France, MiG of Russia, and the European consortium Eurofighter.

The Congress party has alleged that the Modi government had finalised the Rafale deal with the government of France at a much higher price than the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government had got so as to buy 126 medium multirole combat aircraft (MMRCA).

Both the countries, France and India in the month of March this year had signed an agreement on “exchange and reciprocal protection of classified or protected information” when Emmanuel Macron, the French president was in India. Both the sides had consented to create an annual defence dialogue at the ministerial level.
