Gorhe urges women to challenge the stereotypes, claims gender equality can be achieved by reducing biases

Amid growing incidents of violence and conflict over gender equality, the Maharashtra Legislative Council Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe on Friday called upon women to challenge the stereotypes, break free from systemic limitations and collectively build environments where people of all genders, backgrounds and orientations can thrive equally. ‘’The path forward has obstacles but if we challenge them through unified action, the goal of gender balance ceases to be a distant dream, but a vision within reach,’’ she said in her keynote address at the 8 th edition of CII’s WomeNation Summit here in Mumbai. According to Gorhe, gender equality can be achieved by reducing biases in the society and making available equal opportunities.

‘’By uniting together at this WomeNation summit, we embark on a shared journey to challenge ingrained mindsets and create more equitable, inclusive workplaces. This is a chance to gain insight and motivation from those who overcame obstacles with perseverance and grit to reach where they stand today,’’ said Gorhe.

‘’I look forward to shaping a more gender balanced future hand-in-hand with you. Our daughters and grand daughters deserve workplaces and societies where they can dream unencumbered, choose without limits, and challenge life’s circumstances fearlessly to reach their highest potential,’’ said Gorhe. However, she added that The task ahead is monumental, but not impossible. ‘’We need to muster the will to challenge the status quo – within our workplaces, homes, and most importantly, within ourselves. If we believe in the vision of equality, and work collectively to make it a reality…we will succeed,’’she opined.

‘’As we know more than 68.69 crore women are living in India. They account for 49 % of the total Population and without their inclusive development, India cannot progress. Women face may challenges like gender discrimination, sexual abuse, harassment, lack of education, child marriage and poverty,’’argued Gorhe. She suggested that to outgrow these challenges women need to challenge themselves to perform better and break the glass ceiling.

To break the glass ceiling and to achieve empowerment, all women and girls need to develop themselves to achieve overall development. The sustainable development goal is of prime importance. Sustainable development is defined as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, said Gorhe.
