Haryana BJP Govt In Danger? Demand Grows In JJP To Quit NDA Over Farmers’ Protest

There is growing discontent in Dushyant Chautala’s JJP over govt’s response to protests. Many MLAs have demanded breaking ties with the BJP.

In the month of October last year 2019, there was a lot of buzz in the political corridors of Haryana. No party had a clear majority after the assembly elections. In such a situation, the Jananayak Janata Party (JJP), which emerged as a kingmaker, again put Manohar Lal Khattar in the chair in the state by supporting the BJP. Now, after more than a year, once again politics is seen taking a dramatic turn in the state.

Farmers’ Protest has stirred the politics in Delhi. But even in Haryana, the echoes of the politics are seen. There is growing discontent in Dushyant Chautala’s JJP over the way state government has handled the protests. The demand for breaking ties with the BJP is also growing in the party. According to media reports, Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala recently held a meeting with MLAs on the issue.

The pressure on Dushyant Chautala is increasing. In the meeting, feedback was taken from the party MLAs about the impact of the farmers’ movement in their area, the attitude of the people etc. Interestingly, Dushyant’s party JJP has only 10 MLAs. But still, they are in a position to create and spoil the power of Haryana.

Hung Assembly in 2019

Voters did not give any party a majority in the 2019 assembly elections in Haryana. The BJP lost a few seats by a majority. Dushyant-led JJP then supported the BJP and the Khattar government returned to the state. Currently, the ruling BJP has become the single largest party in the 90-seat Haryana Assembly with 40 seats. Congress has 31 seats. The JJP won 10 seats. Apart from this, Haryana Lokahit Party 1, INLD 1 and 7 seats went to others.

Chautala’s JJP Supported Khattar Govt

After the elections, the Congress also tried to form a coalition government with JJP and others. But Dushyant supported BJP and formed Khattar’s government. Now under the changed circumstances, the Congress Legislature Party leader and former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda has become active again. Congress can bring a no-confidence motion against the state government.

In the case of JJP withdrawing support from BJP, the saffron party will be left with 40 MLAs. The BJP may explore the possibility of other independents to complete the magic figure of 45 required for power. At the same time, Congress may join the JJP in its camp, along with other MLAs, to use the stakes to get a majority in the house.
