Haryana Government Has No Papers On Chief Minister’s Citizenship, RTI Reveals

On January 20, an activist had filed an RTI in search of particulars in regards to the citizenship proof of Haryana CM, cupboard ministers, and Governor.

Chandigarh| A Right to Information (RTI) query has revealed that the Haryana government doesn’t have documents on the citizenship of state functionaries including Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, cabinet ministers and the Governor.

On January 20, a Panipat-based activist had filed an RTI seeking details about the citizenship proof of the Chief Minister, cabinet ministers, and Governor Satyadev Narayan Arya.

Ironically, the chief minister Khattar had earlier said that the National Register of Citizens (NRC), which requires people living in India to prove their citizenship by producing relevant documents, will be implemented in Haryana.

In reply to this query on February 17, the Secretariat said, “While returning your (P.P. Kapoor) letter, we would like to inform that the Chief Minister’s secretariat branch doesn’t have any such record available with it. The information sought by you might be available with the Election Commission. Hence, you may get in touch with the Election Commission for the relevant information.”

Mr. Khattar recently said at a press conference that a total of 1,500 applications had been received in Haryana for citizenship from people who had come to India after facing religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan and were living in the State. He had added that they could be given citizenship under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

Assam released the final NRC list on August 31 last year. The final list was uploaded on the State’s official website that showed around 1.9 million people were excluded from the list. The website contains complete information on the exclusion and inclusion of bonafide Indian citizens. Many political parties in the Northeast including the BJP expressed reservations over the final list.

The final NRC in Assam excluded persons who failed to prove their citizenship during the claims process. The process started in 2013 after a Supreme Court order and had been monitored by the apex court since then.
