New Delhi | Ten MLAs from Sikkim Democratic Front have joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in New Delhi on Tuesday.
This has made the BJP now a main Opposition party in the state.
“The effective strength of the SDF legislature party is 13 and 10 of them joined the BJP today,” BJP general secretary Ram Madhav said.
“‘With this, the BJP will become the main opposition party in Sikkim, and we will play the role of a constructive opposition”, he said.
Former chief minister Pawan Kumar Chamling who is also from the SDF has not yet joined the saffron party.
SDF MLAs who joined the party include Dorjee Tshering Lepcha, Ugyen Tshering Gyatso, Narendra Kumar Subba, Dilli Ram Thapa, Karma Sonam Lepcha, Krishna Bahadur Rai, Tashi Thendup Bhutia, Farwanti Tamang, Pintso Namgyal Lepcha and Raj Kumari Thapa.
Dorjee Tshering Lepcha asserted that they wanted to grow the base of BJP in the state.
“We want lotus to bloom in Sikkim. The younger generation has accepted look east policy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi”, he said.
Seventeen is the magic number in the Sikkim assembly. But if ruling SKM loses the seat, it can move down to sixteen.
By-elections in the state will be conducted soon, and if they manage to win all the three seats, their tally can go up to 13, out of 32 seats in the house.
