Kolkata: Several independent candidates today met the West Bengal State Election Commissioner (SEC) A K Singh and demanded adequate security for themselves during campaigning for the panchayar polls scheduled on May 14.
Two candidates — Jakir Molla amd Fatima Bibi — who are contesting from Bhangore area, met Singh and accussed Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Arabul Islam of threatening them.
“We are contesting as independent candidates and we are being threatened from the very first day. Earlier, it was regarding withdrawal of candidature, now we are being asked to leave the area. We want protection from police and SEC,” said Faitma Bibi.
Those who are willing to cast their votes have also been threatened of dire consequences, she alleged.
The TMC, however, rubbished the allegations.
The filing of nominations last month was marred by violence following clashes between the ruling TMC and opposition parties in which several people lost their lives.
