Is Jairam Ramesh joining BJP?

The senior BJP functionary who chose to remain anonymous said that Jairam Ramesh is likely to quit Congress and Join hands with the BJP.

The former Union Minister and Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh is rumoured to join BJP, a senior leader of BJP told HW News. The development comes months after he criticized his own party saying the Congress is suffering from “existential crisis”.

The senior BJP functionary who chose to remain anonymous said that Jairam Ramesh is likely to quit Congress and Join hands with the BJP. However, this is not the first time Jairam Ramesh had shown the signs of changing the party.

In an interview to PTI Jairam Ramesh, last year had said that the Congress government has gone but still many Congress leaders behave as if they are in power. In what was seen as an apparent dig at the party leadership and Gandhi dynasty Jairam Ramesh added, “The sultanate has gone, but we behave as if we are sultans still.” He had also pitched for transformation in the way Congress approaches masses.

Highlighting the defeat of Congress in 1977, he said the defeat was ‘Electoral crisis’. However, he added that what party is currently facing is an “existential crisis”.

In 2013, he had also faced a backlash from his party colleagues for calling Modi the main challenge Congress would be facing. The Congress which was then displaying itself immune from Modi was irked by Ramesh’s comments so much that Rajya Sabha MP Satyavrat Chaturvedi to suggest that “Ramesh can quit the Congress and join the rival’s party”.

Jairam Ramesh has time and again invited the wrath of party colleagues for his statements. Recently, the senior leader of the party is also being ignored by the party high command. During the recent reshuffle of party functionaries, Jairam Ramesh expected a better portfolio. However, he was ignored.
