JNU hit by massive students’ protest against “Anti-Student” fees hike

The protest visuals from the spot show that police have set up barricades to prevent any aggravation. However, several JNU students were seen clashing with cops.

New Delhi: On Monday a dramatic protest was witnessed outside the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus over several issues including the recent fee hike. The protest was organized the JNU Students’ Union.

The protest visuals from the spot show that police have set up barricades to prevent any aggravation. However, several students were seen clashing with cops.

A protestor told news reporters that the protests have been going on for the last 15 days over a fee hike. “At least 40 per cent of students come from a poor family. How will they study here?” said the student protestor.

A huge number of students protested with some holding big banners with messages against the fee hike.

On Thursday the JNU administration appealed students to stop agitating against a draft hostel manual, which allegedly has provisions for fee hike and dress code. The administration added that protests were affecting academic activities.

Expressing concern, the administration said, “These agitations have affected the normal life of a large number of innocent students from across India who are unable to concentrate on their studies, complete academic assignments and prepare for their examinations.”

“The administration appeals to the agitating students to stop their propaganda and false campaigns, and spare the majority of innocent students who want to concentrate on their studies,” the administration added.

The students’ union has been on a strike against a draft hostel manual approved by the Inter-Hall administration, said that the manual has provisions for the fee hike, dress code, and curfew timings.

JNU Students are alleging that the university is following ‘anti-student policies’. The student union is demanding the university to withdraw the hostel manual. The primary protest is against the increase in fees. Student Union is also citing the ‘dress code’ mentioned in the Hostel Manual. The protests have been going on for a long period of time.
