After Karnataka, Congress crisis extends to Goa: 10 MLAs join BJP

In 2017 Goa Assembly Elections, Congress had emerged as the single largest party. But it fell short of a majority in the 40-seat assembly.

 

Panaji| At a time when Congress is dealing with a major crisis in Karnataka, the party has received another blow in the neighbouring state of Goa.

Reportedly, on Wednesday evening as many as 10 MLAs of Congress broke away from the party. The MLAs are set to join the ruling BJP. The group led by the leader of Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar. The MLAs met Speaker Rajesh Patnekar in the evening to give a letter.

In 2017 Goa Assembly Elections, Congress had emerged as the single largest party. But it fell short of a majority in the 40-seat assembly. Congress had won 17 seats while BJP had won 13 seats. Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party and Goa Forward Party had won three seats each while NCP had won 1 seat. The assembly also had three independent MLAs.

However, BJP formed the government in the state with the help of MGP and GFP.
