Live Updates: SP, BSP announce alliance for Lok Sabha polls after 26 years

Lucknow | Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati today announced the pre-poll alliance for the 2019 Lok Sabha election in Uttar Pradesh.

In a joint press conference held in Lucknow, Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati announced that both the parties will contest 76 seats and also stated that the Congress party won’t be a part of the alliance.

Addressing the media, the BSP supremo said,” We have decided to contest upcoming Lok Sabha elections together, this will lead to a new political revolution in the country. And today’s news will give sleepless night to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah.” Announcing the seat share formula, Mayawati said,” BSP will contest on 38 seats, SP on 38 seats. Two Lok Sabha seats we have left for other parties and Amethi and Rae Bareli have been left for Congress.”

Mayawati further added that for the national interest and for the betterment of the nation, we are again coming together.” Attacking the ruling BJP government, she alleged that the Narendra Modi led BJP is an extremely casteist party. Remembering the past incident Mayawati said, “We have decided to forget 1995 guest house incident for the benefit of the country.” Attacking the BJP government,” We are hopeful that this time the BJP and allies will be prevented from making inroads in Uttar Pradesh.”

Ruling out the possibility of Congress joining the alliance, Mayawati said,”We have not included Congress despite knowing that since independence, it ruled for a long time. Farmers & different sections of society have suffered, corruption was at a high. Congress coming to power and BJP coming to power is tantamount to the same. Attacking both Congress and BJP Mayawati said,” Be it BJP or Congress, whoever rules, their policies are mostly the same. For example, we are seeing how both indulged in corruption in defence deals. Congress imposed declared emergency, today there is undeclared emergency”

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav addressing the press conference attacked state government saying BJP has turned Uttar Pradesh into ‘Caste Pradesh’,

We asked whether Mayawati would be the face of Prime Minister, Akhilesh Yadav said,”You know who is my choice. Uttar Pradesh has given Prime Ministers in the past and trend will be repeated again.”

Both the parties will be joining hands after 26 years to contest against the ruling Bjp government. The two parties publically spoke about the alliance in March 2017 and then experimented with it in 3 Lok Sabha bypolls and 1 assembly by polls. In 2014 Lok Sabha Seat, Samajwadi Party won 4 seats while the Mayawati led BSP failed to win even a single seat.
