Mallikarjun Kharge declines Modi govt’s “Special Invite” to Lokpal Meeting

Mallikarjun Kharge in his letter wrote, “Conduct of your government only seeks to diminish the spirit and objective of appointment of Lokpal.”

The leader of opposition in Lok Sabha and senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge today rejected the Modi government’s invite to attend the meeting of Lokpal appointment. Kharge wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying that he will not mark his presence at the Lokpal meeting where he is invited as a “special invitee”.

Kharge feels that the invitation to him under the tag of “special invitee” is an act to keep the independent opposition voices out of the procedure. Mallikarjun Kharge in his letter wrote, “Conduct of your government only seeks to diminish the spirit and objective of appointment of Lokpal.” He added that the Modi government is seeking to deny the opposition to participate, voice and put forth their opinions on the matter.

He also slammed the government for delaying the implementation of Lokpal Act passed by UPA government in 2013. Mallikarjun Kharge also said that the government is not serious about the Lokpal Act. He further suggested, “I would suggest that you bring in an ordinance in shape of the amending bill and place the same in front of parliament when it reopens.”

Lashing out at the Modi government for poor handling of the matter, he said the government’s practices have reduced “the sacred procedure to political pretence”.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court ordered the government to bring into force the Lokayukta and Lokpal act and appoint Lokpal with immediate effect
