Mamata Banerjee meets LK Advani, terms the meeting a “courtesy call”

In times when Mamata Banerjee the Chief Minister of West Bengal is spearheading a frontal attack on the ruling BJP government over the draft of National Register of Citizens for Assam, she met Mr. LK Advani the veteran leader of the BJP party inside his chamber in the building of Parliament today. It is said that Mamata Banerjee sought the veteran leader’s blessings.

A video was posted by the news agency of ANI of the two leaders where Mamata Banerjee was seen with LK Advani and both were seen shaking hands and then Mamata Banerjee was seen moving to take a seat opposite Advani.

However, it is yet unclear as to what has so far happened between the two leaders and what was the point of discussion between them. In fact, Ms. Banerjee called the meeting as a ‘courtesy call’. The meeting happened for a duration of 20 minutes. She said, “”I know Advaniji for a very long time. I went to enquire about his health. It was a courtesy call.”

Further, Mamata Banerjee’s meeting with Advani has sparked off speculations concerning her plans to corner the BJP government on the issues of NRC. It is not just the opposition leaders that she is meeting, but the “sulking” or the “rebel” leaders who feel neglected in the BJP government today.

The other leaders that she met today were Kirti Azad who had a small discussion with her at the TMC office in the parliament. She also met Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ahmed Patel and Ram Gopal Yadav the Samajwadi party leader.

She is likely to meet more leaders of more than a dozen opposition parties and alliance partners of the BJP. After meeting her in the parliament, Ghulam Nabi Azad stated, “Her efforts to unite Opposition leaders are commendable.”
