Modi Cabinet Ministers Ramesh Pokhriyal, Santosh Gangwar Resign Before Big Expansion

Pokhriyal, a Lok Sabha MP from Uttarakhand’s Haridwar parliamentary seat was made the Education Minister in 2019. The minister has been keeping unwell lately and had contracted COVID-19 earlier this year.

Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ and Minister of State in the Labour Ministry Santosh Kumar Gangwar resigned from their respective posts today, hours before the Modi government is set to go for a major cabinet expansion.

Pokhriyal reportedly resigned on health grounds while Gangwar’s reason and the role in government going forward isn’t clear.

Pokhriyal, a Lok Sabha MP from Uttarakhand’s Haridwar parliamentary seat was made the Education Minister in 2019. The minister has been keeping unwell lately and had contracted COVID-19 earlier this year.

Earlier today, Union Minister Debasree Chaudhuri was relieved from the Cabinet. She served as the Minister of State for Women and Child Development. Debasree is a Lok Sabha MP from the Raiganj constituency in West Bengal.

Yesterday, the President made eight changes and appointed new governors to as many states including Thavarchand Gehlot, a former Union minister was appointed as Karnataka governor.

The cabinet expansion is expected to take place today at 5:30 pm at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
