No-confidence motion: Parliament’s Monsoon session day 2 so far

New Delhi | Ahead of the crucial No-confidence motion issued by the Telegu Desam Party (TDP) on the issue of special status for the state of Andhra Pradesh, the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government has gained a strong support from its most crucial ally Shiv Sena.

Shiv Sena on Thursday made it clears that the party will vote against the No-confidence motion. The party has issued a whip for its MPs, directing them to support the government. The statement has come after BJP leader and Union Minister Anant Kumar said that the NDA is united and Shiv Sena will vote in favour of the government. According to sources, Shiv Sena decision to support the BJP government in the No-Trust Vote on Friday has come after Amit Shah spoke to Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray over the phone.

In order to avoid any mishap during the No trust vote, the BJP MPs have been asked to have lunches and dinners together today and tomorrow to ensure that all are present for the no-confidence vote in the Lok Sabha tomorrow.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor while responding to the questions of no-confidence motion said, “It’s an opportunity for us to speak the people and lay out our concern”. Navin Pattnaik’s Biju Janta Dal (BJD) has also issued a whip directing its MPs to be present in Lok Sabha tomorrow for the no-confidence motion.

In a setback to TDP’s no-confidence motion, TDP’s J C Diwakar Reddy has said that he would stay away from the parliament during the No Confidence vote as it was “just a routine” and “the government is not going to fall anyway.”

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar while speaking about no-confidence vote said that Prime Minister Modi’s government had a majority both inside and outside the parliament.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today spoke about the mob violence incidents involving social media rumors and said that the government has asked social sites for regulations for such rumors. “These are unfortunate incidents. We had issued an advisory on this recently, and one in 2016 also. Social media being used to spread fake news and rumours is also a reason. We have asked social sites for regulation,” said Rajnath Singh.

Expressing dissatisfaction with Rajnath Singh’s statement on incidents of mob violence, Opposition party members belonging to the Congress have staged a walkout in the Lok Sabha. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said, “The Home Minister’s statement in Lok Sabha on mob lynching was not satisfactory at all, that is why we staged a walkout from the house. This is not a game of ping-pong that states and Centre keep shifting responsibilities’.
