PM Modi, Rahul Gandhi lose over 1 lakh followers after Twitter takes action against fake accounts

New Delhi | Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday lost a number of Twitter followers after the social media platform started purging locked accounts on Thursday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi followers count on Twitter reduced to 4 lakhs, while Congress leader Shashi Tharoor Twitter followers redcued by 2.2 lakhs. While Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and Congress President Rahul Gandhi lost about 1 lakh followers.

Twitter on Wednesday released a statement that it’s removing locked accounts from users’ follower counts. The purge is part of an ongoing effort to clean up the social media platform after reports that some companies benefited by inflating their follower totals.

Twitter said it had taken the decision due to its “ongoing and global effort to build trust”.It follows renewed scrutiny over fake news and users on social media. The new measures mean that any user whose account is locked for unusual activity – such as being blocked or sending unusual volumes of Tweets – and who did not respond to a prompt to verify their identity would be excluded from Twitter follower counts.
