According to sources inside the Congress party, poll strategist Prashant Kishor is expected to join the grand old party soon and will be given the responsibility to manage the party’s campaign for upcoming Gujarat elections. This comes after the talks between the poll manager and Gandhis failed before the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.
Sources also informed that influential Leuva Patidar leader Naresh Patel is also likely to join the Congress and work along with Kishor. Patel had reportedly put forth a condition that he’ll join the Congress party only if Prashant Kishor is given the control over poll campaign.
According to party insiders, youth leaders like Hardik Patel, Jignesh Mewani are in favour of Kishor joining the Congress party. However, the old batch of Congress leaders have opposed the move.
Kishor, after leading Mamata Banerjee to thumping victory against the BJP in West Bengal, had announced that he will quit the space of political management and will think about joining active politics once again, after his failed stint in Nitish Kumar’s JD(U).
In the last assembly elections in Gujarat, the BJP stronghold for last three decades, the Congress had come close to delivering a blow to the saffron party. Out of 182 seats, the BJP could manage to win 99 seats, only 7 more than the numbers needed for majority. The GOP, on the other hand, scored 77 seats, a jump of 16 seats compared to their previous performance.
The state of Gujarat becomes a key battlefield as Prime Minister Narendra Modi comes from the Western state and ruled it as Chief Minister for 13 years before becoming the party’s Prime Ministerial candidate.
