New Delhi | Congress Chief Rahul Gandhi has been authorised to completely overhaul the party structure, said party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala.

After the CWC meeting in the afternoon, there were speculations that Rahul Gandhi had offered to resign from the position of the party president, taking responsibility for the massive defeat in the Lok Sabha polls.

“The CWC has given Congress President the right to makes changes to restructure the party, a plan for this will be brought soon”, Randeep Singh Surjewala said at a press conference which was held later today.

‘The party confirmed that Rahul Gandhi did indeed offer to resign, however, the party rejected it, citing that the loss was the responsibility for everyone.

“We thank everyone who has backed the party,” said Congress leader Randeep Surjewala.

Congress leaders have indicated that the CWC could go for a deeper analysis of the election outcome. Some drastic action could also follow.

They asserted that they had complete faith in Gandhi and his leadership.

“Rahul has given the party a solid leadership, and it was visible to the people of India. Sure we have lost but that our fight is not on numbers but ideology. Rahul had told party members that he takes responsibility for the party’s performance but the decision was rejected by all the CWK members unanimously,” said senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad.

“If someone can lead the party in such a situation. it’s only Rahul Gandhi, if anyone can lead the opposition, it’s only Rahul Gandhi,” he added.

The party chiefs in many states are likely to be replaced and new teams put in place within a few weeks.

The party’s indication to restructure the General Secretaries and State chiefs comes following the resignation of several state chiefs of Congress, including Raj Babbar from Uttar Pradesh and Niranjan Patnaik from Odisha.
