Rajiv Gandhi never used the 1984 massive mandate to create atmosphere of fear: Sonia Gandhi

Sonia Gandhi said, “Rajiv Gandhi never used the powers to create an atmosphere of fear or destroy the freedom and liberty of the people.”

 

New Delhi| Rajiv Gandhi had also received a full majority but did not use to spread fear, said Congress Interim President Sonia Gandhi. She was addressing the Congress workers and leaders at an event to commemorate former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi’s 75th Birth Anniversary. Taking a jibe at PM Modi whose BJP won 303 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections on its own, Sonia Gandhi said, “Rajiv Gandhi never used the powers to create an atmosphere of fear or destroy the freedom and liberty of the people.”

Remembering Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia said, “He wanted to build a strong and self-reliant India. An India whose citizens get to live a respectable life, an India that moves forward on the energy of its youth.” She added that the India of his imagination was an India that kept diversity and unity together.

Talking of Rajiv Gandhi’s impetus on empowering more young people to come into politics, she said that t was his commitment that the youth get voting rights at the age of 18. “Rajiv ji never posed a threat to democracy, he never suppressed public opinion. His ethics and honesty always inspired him,” Sonia Gandhi said.
