Rift in the Left: CPI likely to announce alliance with Congress soon

The CPI(M) in its political draft had ruled out any possibility of a political alliance with the Congress. However, CPI believes, Congress cannot be kept out of Left Unity.

Going against the two of the left parties in India, Communist Party of India is likely to keep its options open for a political alliance with the Congress. Prakash Karat’s CPM on Tuesday had made public its political resolution which called Congress “Equally dangerous” as the BJP. The CPMone of the powerful left party in India also ruled out the possibility of an alliance with Congress.

However, the communist party of India might go the other way and join hands with Congress. CPI’s party Congress is scheduled to be held in the month of April where the party will discuss the future course of action eying the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Close on the heels of CPI(M)’s resolution to defeat BJP, CPI sources also agreed that the left unity must be forged in order to defeat the “communal and fascist” regime. However, the party unlike, CPM believes that Congress the biggest opposition party cannot be kept out of it.

CPM in its political resolution had said that there is no difference between the ruling BJP and the Congress. The draft calls Congress as a party of “big bourgeois-landlord classes” and challenges Congress’ secular credentials. The draft slams Congress saying the party has failed to fight the communal forces effectively even if it calls itself secular.

Recently, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee chief Ashok Chavan had urged both the Prakashs to come together and join hands with Congress. However, both of them, Prakash Karat of CPM and Prakash Ambedkar of Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh snubbed the Congress saying that there won’t be any alliance with the party. On the other hand, ahead of Karnataka Assembly elections, Janata Dal Secular and Bahujan Samaj Party have joined hands in the state’s first-ever pre-poll alliance.
