Rumours of Pan-India Lock-down Before Prime Minister’s Address on Covid-19

Whatsapp and other social media platforms are flooded with messages that PM Modi might announce country-wide lockdown in his address tonight.

Mumbai| The covid-19 coronavirus infected cases in India have risen to 169 on Thursday. 3 deaths have been reported so far due to the virus. The central and state machinery has been working to contain the spread of the virus by various means such as banning mass gatherings, closing down public spaces such as malls, theatres, etc. Meanwhile, PM Modi announced that he will address the nation on Thursday at 8 PM. It is likely that he will be speaking about the epidemic and steps taken to tackle it.

Considering PM Modi’s history of surprising citizens (the announcement of demonetization), many on the internet started speculating what’s in the store for the country now.

Whatsapp and other social media platforms are flooded with messages that PM Modi might announce country-wide lockdown in his address tonight.

The below message is spread around the social media platforms-

‘Hi. My friends in the ministry here in Odisha are saying that they’ve received a memo from PM’s office ordering a nation wide lockdown starting tomorrow. My friend’s LAMP network in Delhi also corroborates the same news. Modi’s press conference is later tonight and he’s most likely going to announce it. The news might be false too but better safe that sorry. So please stock up on necessities.’

In some messages, it is shared that Dr. Trehan of Medanta has received the message from PMO regarding the nationwide lockdown. On it’s Facebook page, Medanta clarified that it’s false news.

Although it is still unknown if PM Modi is going to make any such announcement, many states have already shut down places where mass gatherings are organized.

Citizens are being advised to practice social distancing, many companies have told their employees to work from home.
