‘Shaheen women don’t have any work, Sharjeel must be shot dead publicly’: BJP MLA

A day after a gunman fired at Jamia protesters, BJP MLA stated that people like Sharjeel Imam “who talk about disintegrating India,” must be shot in public.

New Delhi| Sharjeel Imam is an IIT- Mumbai graduate who is being charged under IPC section 124A (sedition), 153A (promoting or attempting to promote disharmony or feelings of enmity on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, caste or community or any other ground whatsoever) among others.

BJP MLA Sangeet Som, named in several cases linked to the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, is seen stating that women in Shaheen Bagh have no other work and that they are funded by the political parties. He also said that he guarantees that once there is an investigation on them everything will come out.

On speaking on Sharjeel Imam, said to be one of the organizers of Anti-CAA protests at Shaheen Bagh, the BJP MLA said, “As far as people like Sharjeel Imam, who talk of breaking India, are concerned… such people should be shot dead publicly,” to ANI.

“Both Congress and Owaisi will have to go to Pakistan if they did not change their attitude especially when a Bill is being introduced for the welfare of our country… The Congress and Owaisi eat and breathe in our country but they speak on the political and diplomatic line that suites Pakistan,” Sangeet Som had said earlier when Owaisi had opposed the bill in parliament.

The Shaheen Bagh protesters, who sources say will be specially targeted by the BJP during campaigning for the Delhi Assembly elections, have distanced themselves from Sharjeel Imam, saying “no one individual’s videos, statements or articles can represent the movement”.

Sangeet Som isn’t the first BJP leader to take a swipe at the protesting women; last week UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath mockingly asked: “Where are the men?”

Mr Thakur (and another BJP leader – Lok Sabha MP Parvesh Verma, who claimed Shaheen Bagh protesters “will enter your houses, rape your sisters and daughters”) have been handed temporary bans from campaigning.
