The Supreme Court is scheduled to address Hemant Soren’s petition challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate over a land scam. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna, MM Sundresh, and Bela M Trivedi will preside over the special three-judge bench at 10:30 am.
Hemant Soren’s Arrest and Judicial Custody
Following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday, Hemant Soren faced judicial custody for a day after appearing before a special PMLA court in Ranchi. Meanwhile, JMM stalwart Champai Soren, designated as Hemant’s successor, is slated to take the oath as Chief Minister today between 12 pm and 2 pm. Governor CP Radhakrishnan appointed him the Chief Minister-designate, tasking him with proving his majority within ten days.
Legal Battle and Political Maneuvering
Hemant Soren’s legal battle shifted to the Supreme Court after initially being filed in the Jharkhand High Court. Notable lawyers Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Hemant, opted for an urgent listing in the apex court. Hemant argues that the summons issued by the Enforcement Directorate violates his fundamental rights and constitutes an abuse of law by the Centre to destabilize the democratically elected government.
Coalition Support and BJP’s Response
After Champai Soren’s appointment, the ruling coalition rallied support, showcasing video statements from 43 Opposition MLAs. Meanwhile, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav criticized the BJP’s tactics, calling Hemant Soren’s arrest dictatorial. In response, the BJP defended the arrest, accusing Hemant of corruption and emphasizing its commitment to tribal welfare.
Future Challenges and Resilience
Despite challenges, Champai Soren remains confident in the coalition’s strength, assuring their support base will expand. Weathering political storms, the coalition aims to safeguard its MLAs and maintain cohesion amidst BJP pressures.
