The US has congratulated Army Chief General Bipin Rawat on his appointment as India’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).

The US’s Ambassador to India, Kenneth Juster, personally congratulated General Bipin Rawat. “Looking forward to more productive discussions on ways to advance the US-India defense partnership,” he twitted.

The Maldives has also congratulated General Rawat on his new position. The foreign minister of Maldives Abdullah Shahid said the India-Maldives defense partnership “is on a very strong footing”.

Rawat is completing his full three-year term as the Chief of Army Staff on December 31, 2019. He will serve as Chief of Defence Staff till March 2022.

Gen Bipin Rawat will be able to serve as CDS for up to three years — the central government has amended rules extending the age of retirement to 65 years.

The move to appoint a CDS is in line with the advice of various panels on security matters to streamline India’s defense apparatus. A single chain of command was seen as desirable.

Indian Army chief General Bipin Rawat has now been officially named as India’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). General Bipin Rawat’s tenure will start from 31st December until further orders and extension in his service. The announcement has been made months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised that his government would establish the top army post. New Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane will be given the honour of an Army Guard on the same day for assuming command of the force.

Earlier, the Cabinet Committee on Security approved the creation of the CDS who will act as the head military adviser to the defense minister on all matters relating to tri-services. According to current rules, the service chiefs can serve for three years period or till attaining the age of 62, whichever is earlier.
