Varun Gandhi gets honest about dynasty politics and being a “Gandhi”

Varun Gandhi asked, “If my last name were not Gandhi, would I have become an MP at (the age of) 29? I would have not.”

The issue of dynasty politics has been debated and discussed in India for quite a long time. In India, the Congress party and several regional parties are accused of dynasty politics. Recently, Congress President Rahul Gandhi during his Singapore visit had addressed the issue. Now, another Gandhi scion has broken silence on the dynasty politics.

Varun Gandhi, a BJP MP from Sultanpur got honest about his dynasty background and said that the surname “Gandhi” helped him to progress at a faster pace in politics. Gandhi was addressing a gathering of college students in Vadodara. He said if he hadn’t been from “Gandhi Family” he wouldn’t have become an MP in his thirties. “If my last name were not Gandhi, would I have become an MP at (the age of) 29? I would have not. Would I have become a general secretary (of the BJP) at 32? Probably not,” Gandhi said.

He further said the situation is so because of the unequal system in the country. He said, “We are living in an unequal country and we are beneficiaries of this system.” “Even When we talk about young MPs, you name anyone, everybody comes from a political family,” Varun Gandhi asserted.

Varun Gandhi addressing the students said there might be a bunch of youths who might be more intelligent than him but if they want to join politics, they will need to dedicate at least 25 to 30 years to be at such a position. “By then you will be tired,” Gandhi asserted.

However, expressing faith in the country, he asked the students to move beyond the responsibility of just casting the vote and appealed to make a difference to the society.

Varun Gandhi also stressed on the income disparity between the people of India. Pointing out to the difference in incomes, he said, “10 percent of Indians occupy 91 percent of the country’s assets.” He further told them that he had written a letter to Member of Parliament whose assets are more than 25 crores to not take the salary. However, he added, nobody extended the support.

Talking about the eradication of corruption, he said, “The flow of information is not transparent in our country. Information dissemination through transparent means is the solution to corruption.”
