Kamal Haasan had said that the Kannada language came out from the Tamil language and this created a huge row
Karnataka’s High Court has sent a warning to Tamil Nadu actor-politician Kamal Haasan of misusing his right to free speech. The court said that he was wounding people’s feelings and told him to take his remarks back.
Kamal Haasan had said that the Kannada language came out from the Tamil language and this created a huge row.
The High Court also gave him a warning and said, “you can’t unscramble scrambled eggs”.
The Court said, “You are not an ordinary man.”
It added, “You have a right to speech… but not to hurt sentiments. The fundamental right of (free) speech and expression cannot be given to an extent that it hurts the sentiments of the masses. We are leaving this to you now… apologise if you have hurt anyone.”
The Court also said, “In this case you made a statement. Withdraw that statement… that is all. Crores can be earned from Karnataka… but if you don’t need the people (of Kannada) then leave the revenue…”
“But we will not permit anyone to take public sentiments for a ride… when mistakes happen you should say, ‘It is in this context I spoke (but) if it has hurt anyone I apologise’,” added the High Court.
The KFCC banned Haasan’s new movie, ‘Thug Life’ from premiering in Karnataka, on Monday. The High Court was hearing a petition that sought direction to authorities and the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce. This was a petition not to stop or bar the release of the film in the state.
The President of the film body, MM Narasimhalu said, “Kamal Haasan is insisting, ‘I have not done anything wrong, so will not apologise’. But if he does not, there is no question of allowing the film’s release.”
Kamal Haasan did not oblige to apologise, on Friday. He said that he would have apologised if he felt if his remarks were wrong. He said, “This is a democracy and I believe in law and justice,”
