Several parts of Chennai are already inundated in water after being lashed by heavy rainfall since Tuesday ahead of severe cyclonic storm Nivar making landfall later on Wednesday night. The heavy rainfall has raised the water levels of Chembarambakkam Lake and authorities opened the gates of the lake for the first time since 2015 to release the water.
Meanwhile, other parts of coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have evacuated thousands of people in anticipation of the havoc Cyclone Nivar may cause in these areas as the storm approaches with a wind speed of 120-130 kmph.
