Imran Khan has been as sworn in as Pakistan;s news prime minister after his party’s victory in last month’s election. Khan was elected as his party PTI swept the election, vowing to bring an era of accountability and prosperity to the country. Khan who was famously captioned the Pakistan national cricket team to World Cup glory in 1992, has also invited some of his teammates to his oath taking ceremony. Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Sindhu too had reached Pakistan to attend the ceremony. In Imran Khan’s victory address to the nation, he expressed how he is expecting India as a big opportunity to be explored. So can we expect any path-breaking gestures towards India now? Former Kerala Minister C N Balakrishnan dead

Kochi | Veteran Congress leader and former Kerala minister C N Balakrishnan died at a private hospital here, party sources said Tuesday.

He was 84. Balakrishnan, a former Cooperation minister, undergoing treatment for pneumonia at a private hospital here and the end came late Monday night, the sources said.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly Ramesh Chennithala were among those who condoled his death.

Supreme Court refuses to recall its order, dismisses PIL against FM Arun Jaitley

New Delhi | The Supreme Court Tuesday refused to recall its order by which it had imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on a lawyer for filing a PIL against Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, raising allegations relating to the capital reserve of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, which had also dismissed the petition, said it would hear petitioner lawyer M L Sharma only after he deposits Rs 50,000 as cost with the apex court registry. “We are not going to recall our any order. You deposit Rs 50,000 then only we will hear your any old or new petition,” the bench which also comprised Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph said. The lawyer, who had filed the PIL in his personal capacity, Tuesday sought urgent hearing of his plea alleging that the RBI was in a mess as its Governor Urjit Patel has also resigned.

The apex court, however, did not entertain his plea.

Urjit Patel’s resignation a fallout of rift with Jaitley: CPI

New Delhi | RBI Governor Urjit Patel’s resignation was a fallout of a rift between him and Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, CPI General Secretary S Sudhakar Reddy said on Monday. Patel, who had a run in with the government over autonomy of the central bank, resigned from his job earlier on Monday, citing personal reasons. His resignation came 10 months before his three-year tenure was to get over.

“It should be an eye opener for the PM. Even Modi’s own people are unable to digest these things. I believe this is a setback to Modi government and particularly to Arun Jaitley,” Reddy said. He claimed said that a rift with Jaitley was the actual reason behind Patel’s resignation.

“I think he was very much attacked by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and his company,” he said. The CPI leader further alleged that Patel was unable to digest the so-called reforms introduced by the Modi government and as a result, he resigned. “It should be an eye-opener for the PM. Even Modi’s own people are unable to digest these things. I believe this is a setback to Modi government and particularly to Arun Jaitley,” Reddy said. He alleged that more than the prime minister, the finance minister was responsible for the pathetic economic situation of the country. “Jaitley is destroying the economy of the country. His advice made the economy suffer,” he alleged.

Patel, 55, who took over as the 24th Governor of the central bank on September 5, 2016, had the shortest tenure since 1992.
