The century-old Cauvery water dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu has once again come to the fore. As Karnataka is facing severe drought-like conditions, it released only 26.7 thousand million cubic feet of water against the demand of 86.36 thousand million cubic feet till 22 August. This irked Tamil Nadu, which has now approached the Supreme Court. The supreme court agreed to constitute a bench to hear the Cauvery River sharing dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The water allocation after the Supreme Court’s verdict in 2018 was that Karnataka was allocated 284.75 thousand million cubic feet, which was 14.75 thousand million cubic feet more than the 2007 verdict; Tamil Nadu was allocated 404.25 thousand million cubic feet, 14.75 thousand million cubic feet less than the 2007 verdict. And, Kerala was allocated 30 thousand million cubic feet, Puducherry was allocated 7 thousand million cubic feet, 10 Tmcft for environmental purposes and 4 thousand million cubic feet to the sea. Our Managing editor Mr Sujit Nair had in 2018 done an editorial explaining the Cauvery River dispute. Let’s listen in.
