The tragedy at Dr. Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital in Nanded has left our community in shock and mourning, with the death toll rising to 35 on Tuesday, up from 24 on Monday. Heartbreakingly, this number includes 16 infants and 19 adults, among them twin boys born underweight on Sunday, who sadly passed away on Monday.

Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif visited the hospital on Tuesday and, after discussions with medical professionals and administrative staff, openly acknowledged that the shortage of doctors played a significant role in these devastating losses. To address this critical issue, the government has decided to appoint doctors on a contractual basis until regular recruitment fills the existing vacancies.

In another distressing incident, 14 deaths were reported at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sambhaji Nagar, including two infants. Hospital Superintendent Dr. Vijay Kalyankar, however, clarified that these deaths were not due to a lack of staff or medications.

Union Minister of State for Health Bharti Pawar has requested a thorough report on the incidents from both hospitals. She expressed her profound sadness over the situation and assured that necessary action would be taken after a detailed investigation, particularly emphasizing the gravity of the situation at the Nanded hospital.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has pledged a comprehensive government inquiry into the Nanded incident, vowing that those responsible will be held accountable.

Minister Mushrif, accompanied by Guardian Minister Girish Mahajan, addressed the emergency situation in Nanded. The meeting was attended by former Chief Minister and MLA Ashok Chavan and MP Pratap Chikhalikar. Mushrif outlined the corrective measures, including recruiting doctors on a contractual basis, deploying doctors from other hospitals, and collaborating with private practitioners. Additionally, orders have been issued to expedite the recruitment of nurses and sanitation workers. The government is also exploring options such as outsourcing and hastening the filling of class four posts, as per Mushrif’s instructions.
