Teacher hits student for writing ‘Jai Shree Ram’

Following the emergence of a distressing video wherein a teacher from Uttar Pradesh was seen compelling her students to assault a young Muslim classmate, another disturbing incident unfolded in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district. Here, a school teacher was arrested for allegedly subjecting a student to physical punishment after the student purportedly inscribed ‘Jai Shri Ram’ on the classroom blackboard. According to an account by a fellow teacher at the school, Neeraj, hailing from an underprivileged family, was forcibly removed from the classroom by his Urdu teacher, Farooq. This drastic measure was taken upon the discovery of the religious slogan on the classroom board. Neeraj suffered a torrent of kicks and blows during his unfortunate journey to the Principal’s office. Regrettably, even within the principal’s presence, Mohd Hafeez, the principal himself, continued the physical assault. The gravity of the situation led Neeraj’s father to admit him to the hospital the subsequent morning. Responding to this incident, the police initiated a First Information Report (FIR) against the accused teacher and the school’s principal. Tragically, the principal is currently evading authorities. Both the teacher and the principal are confronting charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, encompassing Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 342 (wrongful confinement), 504 (intentional insult), 506 (criminal intimidation), along with Section 75 (cruelty to child) of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act. In reaction to these events, alongside the aforementioned occurrence in Kathua, the Deputy Commissioner issued an official notification, revealing the constitution of a three-member committee designated to conduct a thorough inquiry. The committee consists of the Sub Divisional Magistrate of Bani, the Deputy Chief Education Officer of Kathua, and the principal of the government higher secondary school in Kharote. Simultaneously, an analogous incident unfolded in Uttar Pradesh’s Neha Public School. A viral video depicted a teacher encouraging students to physically harm a fellow Muslim student. The distressing impact of this incident on the child was evident, as articulated by the child’s deeply concerned father, leading to the child’s inability to sleep at night. Tragically, such incidents are not isolated. In March of the preceding year, a group of female students from a government school in Jammu’s Kishtwar disclosed that they were subjected to threats by their peers for chanting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” during the morning assembly after the national anthem. These incidents are happening in schools, where we are taught to pledge that “”all Indians are my brothers and sisters.”” Every student who wears the uniform is considered equal in the eyes of the educators. Schools emphasize uniformity to counter judgments based on caste, religion, creed, or culture. Each student donning the uniform is regarded impartially by educators. However, these recent incidents starkly undermine these principles. Schools stand as bastions where children absorb and put into practice foundational values. Notably, the lessons imbibed in classrooms are internalized in real-life conduct. Students, being young and impressionable, forge friendships based on shared interests rather than religious differences. Educational institutions should ideally be nurturing these values instead of endorsing religious bias or condoning violence. The educators wield considerable influence, shaping the minds of the future generation. In a country that upholds secularism in its preamble, witnessing educators stray from these ideals is undeniably disheartening. The repercussions of such actions could reverberate through the futures of our students and our nation, contradicting the very essence of unity and harmony that educational institutions should cultivate.
