During a conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin underscored the necessity of bringing those responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack to justice, as stated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday.

Putin expressed his condolences for the lives lost in the tragic incident on April 22. He affirmed Russia’s unwavering support for India in its battle against terrorism, according to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. Both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing the special and privileged strategic partnership between their nations.

“President Putin @KremlinRussia_E called PM @narendramodi and strongly condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam, India. He conveyed deepest condolences on the loss of innocent lives and expressed full support to India in the fight against terrorism. He emphasised that the perpetrators of the heinous attack and their supporters must be brought to justice,” MEA Jaiswal said.

Prime Minister Modi extended his greetings to Putin in honor of the 80th anniversary of Russia’s Victory Day and invited him to the upcoming annual summit scheduled to take place in India later this year, as reported by Jaiswal.

Although PM Modi received an invitation from Russia to participate in the Victory Day celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s triumph over Germany in World War II, he has decided not to attend due to the current security concerns following the Pahalgam attack.

Similarly, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is also expected to forgo the Victory Day parade. Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth likely to represent India at the event.

Russia’s Victory Day holds significant national pride. Numerous global leaders and military officials attend it.

Putin accepted PM Modi’s invitation to visit India. He emphasized that the relationship between India and Russia remains unaffected by external pressures. He added that it continues to evolve positively, as reported by the Kremlin through state-run TASS.

There is anticipation about the Russian President visiting India for the annual summit later this year. PM Modi made two visits to Russia last year. One of these was for the annual summit with President Putin and another to attend the Brics summit in Kazan.

Previously, Putin condemned the Pahalgam terror attack, labeling it a ‘brutal crime’. He reiterated Russia’s commitment to supporting India in its fight against terrorism. Many leaders expressed their condemnation of the Pahalgam attack.
