“Will Bullet train shift Mumbaikars when our city drowns?” Milind Deora asks CM Fadnavis

Mumbai | Mumbai Congress Chief Milind Deora today took a dig at the state government over flooding in Mumbai due to continuous rains and cutting down of Mangroves for the Bullet train project.

Taking on Twitter Deora asked Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis,”Mangroves protect Mumbai from storms, winds, waves & floods. Yet, 54,000 will be razed for the bullet train. Will the train shift Mumbaikars to Ahmedabad when our city drowns? I urge @CMOMaharashtra to urgently intervene.”

Deora also questioned the ShivSena BJP government’s plan to plant 5 trees in place of every mangroves that is cut. He further wrote,” Planting trees across Maharashtra won’t save Mumbai.”
Mangrove forests helps in protecting the coastlines from tsunamis and floods.

Deora’s tweet comes after the entire city was waterlogged due to continuous rains from last 5 days which lead to traffic jams, and shutting down of railways lines for a period of time.

The state government declared a public holiday in the city after the Indian Meteorological Department had forecast heavy rains.

Earlier State transport minister said that mangrove forest spread over 13.36 hectares will be affected because of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high speed rail corridor, commonly called the bullet train project.
