Mumbai: Liz Truss becomes UK’s new prime minister defeating Rishi Sunak by over 20,000 votes.
The results of the polls were announced at 12:30 pm (5 pm IST).
Liz Truss belongs to Conservative Party leader and is also the UK Foreign Minister. She will now succeed ousted Boris Johnson as British Prime Minister.
While giving her victory speech, Liz Truss said, “I am honoured to be elected Leader of the Conservative Party. Thank you for putting your trust in me to lead and deliver for our great country. I will take bold action to get all of us through these tough times, grow our economy, and unleash the United Kingdomâs potential.”
She becomes the third female prime minister of Britain following Theresa May and Margaret Thatcher marking history.
