Delhi Police had sought permission from the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government to convert nine stadiums in the national capital into temporary prisons in view of the farmers’ protest.
In the wake of a large number of farmers approaching the national capital to protest farm bills, Delhi Police had sought permission from the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government to convert nine stadiums in the national capital into temporary prisons in view of the farmers protest.
However, the Kejriwal-led AAP government has rejected the request, stating that a peaceful protest is farmers’ constitutional right.
“The demands of the farmers are valid and the Central government should fulfil them as soon as possible. Putting the farmers in jails is not a solution. They are protesting in a peaceful manner. Every Indian has the right to protest peacefully. They can’t be sent to jails for protesting. Hence, the Delhi government rejects Delhi Police’s request to turn stadiums into temporary prisons,” the Delhi government said.
Earlier, AAP MLA Raghav Chaddha had requested his own government to deny the permission for converting stadiums into prisons.
“I urge the Delhi Govt to deny permission for setting up temporary prisons. The farmer of our country is neither a criminal nor a terrorist. Right to protest peacefully is enshrined in Indian Constitution – Article 19(1) and protests are the hallmark of a free, democratic society.,” Mr Chaddha had said.
National spokesperson of AAP, Saurabh Bharadwaj, had also requested the government not to grant the permission.
“The Delhi Police under the Center wants our farmers in jail. The Delhi Police has sought permission from the Delhi government to convert 9 stadiums into jails. We will not allow this to happen at all. This is a request to the Delhi government,” the MLA from Greater Kailash had tweeted along with a video.
