“No Ideological Difference Between Us”: Tharoor After Kharge’s ‘Fight Remarks’

Tharoor Kharge Congress

Shashi Tharoor took to Twitter and stated that he agrees with Kharge and in the end, Congress must take on the BJP and not each other

New Delhi: Congress Presidential Elections are not a contest within the party. It is a chance for party members to choose how to effectively take on the BJP, said Congress Leader Shashi Tharoor in a response to rival contender Mallikarjun Kharge.

After the nomination process, Kharge said that he spoke with Tharoor. Kharge told him that it would be “better to have a consensus candidate”, but the Tharoor insisted on a contest, and said that there should be a fight in democracy.

“When a candidate decides to contest, how I can stop him? So, he is fighting and he is my younger brother. It is a family matter, and we have to stay united today and tomorrow,” the 80-year-old MP said.

Today morning, Shashi Tharoor took to Twitter and stated that he agrees with Kharge. He said that in the end, Congress must take on the BJP and not each other.  The election for party chief, he said, is to choose “how to do it most effectively”.

“Let me make clear that I agree with @kharge ji that all of us in @incIndia wish to take on the BJP rather than each other. There is no ideological difference between us. The choice for our voting colleagues Oct17 is only on how to do it most effectively. #ThinkTomorrowThinkTharoor,” he tweeted.

In his election campaign, Shashi Tharoor said Congress needs to change, and Kharge is a candidate of “continuity” and “status quo.”

There has been a high voltage political drama in the Congress party regarding Congress presidential polls. Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot too was supposed to contest the elections. But after recent political developments in Rajasthan, he has decided to withdraw from this race.

In Congress, there has been a lot of debate about who will be the next CM of Rajasthan if Ashok Gehlot becomes Congress President, as the party will follow the ‘one person one post’ policy adapted in the Udaipur declaration. Congress leader Sachin Pilot’s name was on the cards to become the next CM of Rajasthan but many MLAs were against him and this became a hurdle for him to get the opportunity to serve as CM.

In the wake of this political drama, Ashok Gehlot met Sonia Gandhi last week. After meeting Gandhi, he spoke to media persons and said that he has decided not to contest the presidential polls.
