In this compelling editorial, Mr. Sujit Nair addresses an extremely distressing and deplorable incident that has taken place in the northeastern state of Manipur, India. The incident he discusses is not only tragic but also showcases the depths of inhumanity. With a heavy heart, Mr. Nair sheds light on the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the need for immediate attention and action. The incident has shocked the nation, and it serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address issues related to women’s safety and the protection of their rights. A shocking video showing two women being paraded naked on a road by a group of men in Manipur has gone viral on social media, leading to widespread condemnation and calls for immediate action. The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) has alleged that the women were gang-raped in a field during the incident, which occurred on May 4 in Kangpokpi district, located about 35 km from the state capital, Imphal. However, the police have stated that the incident happened in a different district, despite the First Information Report (FIR) being filed in Kangpokpi. In response to the horrifying incident, Chief Minister N Biren Singh has ordered a priority investigation by the police. Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani also spoke to the Chief Minister and Chief Secretary about the incident, and she was assured of swift action against the perpetrators. Prior to the on-camera incident, clashes had broken out between the Meitei and Kuki tribes in Manipur over the Meiteis’ demand for Scheduled Tribes (ST) status. The ITLF stated that the women in the video were constantly molested by the men while they pleaded for mercy. The group also expressed concern over the video being shared on social media, which exposed the identity of the victims, and called on the National Commission for Women and the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes to intervene. The Manipur Police have filed a case of gang-rape and murder in response to the incident and have identified the men involved. The survivors reported the crime to the police about 15 days after the incident occurred. The police are actively working on apprehending the culprits. The incident has sparked shock and outrage on social media, with political leaders and others urging the central and state governments to take decisive action against those responsible for this heinous act.
