Chief Justice DY Chandrachud of India has urged the collaboration of legal systems across Global South nations to address barriers hindering equal access to justice. Speaking at the inaugural Regional Conference on Access to Legal Aid in New Delhi, he underscored the judiciary’s remarkable potential to enhance access to justice.
Chandrachud lauded the innovative legal practices of countries in the Global South, including India, that have positioned courts as the “people’s court.”
The two-day conference, organized by the National Legal Services Authority, International Legal Foundation, UN Development Programme, and UNICEF, aims to tackle challenges in providing quality legal aid in Global South countries.

Chandrachud emphasized the importance of administrative-level collaboration among legal systems to promote judicial cooperation and improve access to justice.
