Union Minister and Telangana BJP president G. Kishan Reddy declared on Monday that if his party assumes power in the state, Hyderabad will undergo a name change to ‘Bhagyanagar.
He emphasized the need for the change, questioning the historical relevance of the name “Hyderabad” and expressing a desire to replace it with “Bhagyanagar” if the BJP government takes charge. Reddy cited the precedent of renaming cities such as Madras to Chennai, Bombay to Mumbai, and Calcutta to Kolkata, highlighting that such transformations are not unprecedented.

In advocating for the renaming, he posed the question, “What is wrong with changing the name of Hyderabad to Bhagyanagar?” Reddy further questioned the significance of the name “Hyder” and asserted that if the BJP comes into power, the name “Hyder” would be eliminated in favor of the proposed change to “Bhagyanagar.”
Drawing parallels to other cities that have undergone name changes, Reddy mentioned transformations like Rajpath becoming Kartavya Path. Overall, he defended the proposal to rename Hyderabad, aligning it with previous instances of city nomenclature adjustments across India.
