Myanmar surpassed Afghanistan as the world’s leading opium producer as of 2023, producing an estimated 1,080 metric tonnes, according to a UN report. This shift occurred after the Taliban’s crackdown on opium in Afghanistan, resulting in a 95% drop to approximately 330 tonnes. Myanmar’s opiate economy is now valued between $1 billion and $2.4 billion, constituting 1.7 to 4.1% of the country’s 2022 GDP, according to UNODC.
