His family denied that he could fire at the cops, and alleged they had pressured him to confess his role in the rape case.

In her first reaction after Akshay Shinde was shot dead by the police in self-defence, the mother of the 24-year-old school sweeper, who is accused of raping two nursery girls in Maharashtra’s Badlapur, has challenged the police claim of the events that led to her son’s death in custody yesterday.

Shinde snatched the gun of a constable and shot a police officer inside the police van and was injured in retaliatory firing by the cops; the cops claimed that he died at the hospital.

His family denied that he could fire at the cops, and alleged they had pressured him to confess his role in the rape case.

“My son was afraid of bursting crackers and crossing the road. How can he shoot at police officers? The police also got the confessional statement written by him under pressure. Only he knows what he was made to write,” the accused’s mother and uncle told reporters last night.

Anna Shinde, the accused’s father, has also demanded a probe into his killing. A high-level investigation has been ordered into his death.

Police Version:Ā

According to the crime branch, they took Shinde’s custody around 5.30 pm on Monday from Taloja jail, where he was lodged.

A team of around ten policemen was escorting him from the jail in a police vehicle, with four armed officers seated next to him, according to reports.

As the vehicle reached the Mumbra Bypass, Shinde allegedly snatched the pistol of assistant police inspector Nilesh More and fired three rounds at him, one of which hit him in the thigh.

In defence, senior inspector Sanjay Shinde fired one round at Akshay Shinde, which struck him in the head. Shinde was then taken to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, Kalwa, where he was declared dead, the senior police officer said. His body was taken to JJ Hospital in Mumbai for post-mortem on Monday evening.

Interestingly, police inspector Sanjay Shinde, whose bullet killed Akshay, has in the past worked with a suspended former cop, popularly known as encounter specialistĀ  Pradeep Sharma.
