He further said, “We were criticised for vandalising the toll booths, but whatever the government mechanism, they don’t acknowledge the seriousness of an issue unless extreme steps are taken. Anyway, at least Mumbaikars got toll-free, and our struggle bore fruit. It is a matter of happiness that our agitation was quite successful.”

In the latest move to woo the middle class, the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government has announced that Cars entering the state’s capital, Mumbai, will no longer need to pay a toll. The decision will come into effect from midnight.

CM Shinde said all light motor vehicles would be exempt from any toll tax at the five toll booths for entry into Mumbai. This move will save commuters’ time and reduce pollution and traffic. And termed the move as a “historic decision.”

Light motor vehicles are primarily designed for carrying passengers or goods. Vehicles in this category include cars (hatchbacks, sedans, and SUVs), jeeps, vans, auto-rickshaws, taxis, delivery vans, and small trucks.

“From midnight tonight Light Motor Vehicles will be exempt from paying toll at all the five toll booths entering Mumbai. Congratulations to all the citizens living within the MMR area, and a big congratulations to my Maharashtra Sainiks.┬а They fought hard for the demands that there be transparency in toll transactions and that if the road works are paid for through the money collected, they should be toll-free,”┬а MNS Chief Raj Thackeray, whose party has been aggressive over the demand, said in a post on X.

“I would want to congratulate the state government for this, but they should assure the people that this is not a decision taken just for the election. Mumbai became toll-free today, but not before many people staked their fortunes through this game,” Thackeray added.

“They must all be investigated. But I am not so sure if that will ever happen, because nobody knows who all have their interests tangled in it. At least Mumbaikars got freed from the burden of toll, and that’s reason to be happy. Dear Maharashtra Sainiks, from now on, whenever someone asks, “What happened to your toll agitations?”, proudly quote the Mumbai example. And say that once we pick up a cause, we see it to the bitter end. And that we don’t rest until we’ve reached our objectives. Once again, congratulations to all! Raj Thackeray |,” The post read.”
