Israel Confirms Killing Of Hashem Safieddine, Successor Of Hassan Nasrallah

On Tuesday Israel confirmed the killing of Hashem Safieddine, Hezbollah’s second-in-command. This happened during an airstrike three weeks ago in Beirut. Safieddine was likely to be the successor of Hassan Nasrallah. Safieddine held key roles in military and financial operations.

According to reports, on late Tuesday, the army said that Israel’s air force conducted a precise, intelligence-based strike on Hezbollah’s main intelligence headquarters. Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike on 27 September.

Israel’s airstrikes have targeted Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon amidst the ongoing border clashes. On October 8, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the military had “taken out” Safieddine, without specifically naming him.

According to the NDTV, the statement added that over 25 militants of Hezbollah were present in the headquarters during the strike, “including Bilal Saib Aish, who was in charge of aerial intelligence gathering”.

Despite the killings of Hezbollah’s senior commanders, Israel continues its offensive in Gaza and Lebanon. Reports suggest that Israel is aiming to lock in a strong position before the upcoming elections in the U.S.
