In the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, 60% i.e. 164 of the outgoing Assembly’s MLAs have declared criminal cases against themselves. Amongst this 39% i.e. 106 MLAs face serious criminal charges.
According to The Mint, these include offenses like murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, and crimes against women. The findings come from an analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Maharashtra Election Watch, which reviewed 272 out of 288 MLAs.
Of the BJP’s 103 MLAs, 62 have declared criminal cases. Out of these 62 MLAs, 38 face serious charges.
In Ajit Pawar’s NCP, 25 MLAs have criminal cases, with 14 having serious charges. Among other parties, 22 MLAs from Shiv Sena (Shinde), 20 from Congress, and several independents have also declared criminal cases.

Additionally, 93% of the MLAs analyzed are crorepatis. The wealthiest include BJP’s Parag Shah with assets worth ₹500 crore. After Parag Shah, Mangalprabhat Lodha of the BJP possesses ₹441 crore assets. Congress’s Sanjay Chandrakant Jagtap with ₹245 crore.
This Assembly elections will see the ruling Mahayuti alliance (BJP, Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP) competing against the MVA (Shiv Sena Uddhav faction, Congress, and Sharad Pawar’s NCP).
The General Assembly election is scheduled to be held in Maharashtra on 20 November 2024 to elect the 288 members of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. The counting and the results will be declared on 23 November 2024.
