“Former Supreme Court judge RF Nariman on Sunday exhorted the top court to strike down the colonial era sedition law and its copycat provisions in the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) to protect citizens’ right to free speech and shore up press freedom. Delivering the Viswanath Pasayat Memorial lecture – which was attended among others by Justice U U Lalit, next in line to be the chief justice of India when CJI N V Ramana demits office next year – Justice Nariman said: “”It is important for the court to use its power and strike down Section 124A, IPC, and the offensive portions of the UAPA. Only then would citizens be able to breathe more freely.””
